In a display of commitment to Uganda's environment, UAP Old Mutual Insurance Uganda proudly participated in the launch of the Mabira Conservation Campaign on 2nd September 2023. Joined by esteemed partners, the Insurance Brokers Association of Uganda, Uganda Insurance Association, and the Umoja Conservation Trust, this initiative is part of the much anticipated #GreeningSchools campaign, championed by Her Excellency, Janet Museveni, Minister of Education and Sports.
The partners met in the spirit of unity and environmental stewardship at Mother Kevin College in Lugazi, where the tree planting session took place.
According to a 2021 World Bank Group report, more than 80 percent of Ugandan households depend on natural resources for their livelihoods, these being agricultural land, fertile soils, forests, and freshwater resources. The report further states that about 41 percent of the country’s land is now degraded. The report also notes that between 1990 and 2015, forest cover loss amounted to $1.2 billion worth of economic loss.
Commenting more about this our Marketing and Communications Specialist, Caroline Owomuhangi noted, “This report not only highlights a big challenge but the significance of why we are here today. This is a collective responsibility for us to address this challenge head-on. Sustainable practices are the key to securing a green Uganda.”
“We are launching a tree planting campaign that is not just about planting trees but about sowing the seeds of sustainability,” She further said.
Brian Toshi Bwana, The Umoja Conservation Trust Lead also stated, “We are honoring the Visionary First Lady of Uganda today. We commend her remarkable efforts in leading the task of greening secondary schools in the nation. We embark on a new journey to establish indigenous seed beds, fostering the growth of this incredible initiative. Together, we're sowing the seeds of a greener future."
The Mabira Conservation Campaign set a monumental target of planting over 10,000 trees annually. At the campaign launch alone, we celebrated the planting of over 2,000 trees.
This is evidence of UAP Old Mutual Insurance Uganda’s unwavering commitment to sustainability.
